There has been a new trend towards NATURAL and HEALTHY lately and we LOVE it. Now more than ever, dog pawrents are paying special attention to what they’re feeding their dogs. Gone are the times of cheap, filler-based kibbles and many dog owners are spending time researching and purchasing the nourishing diets. Whether you’re feeding premium kibble or a homemade diet, there are still plenty of supplements we can add to our dog’s food to boost their health. Over-supplementation however is something you should avoid, but if you’re looking for a little help getting your dog’s coat to shine or to boost their immune system, especially now in times of quarantine, check out Cooka’s favourite super-foods.

#1 – Fish Oil Fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids improve skin and coat health, boost the overall immune system, while reducing inflammation and pain. But don’t overdo it, as too much fish oil can greatly reduce the amount of vitamin E in your dog’s system. At Cooka’s we like to add a spoon daily in our home-made food and of course, there is nothing like freshly grilled sardines for the uber-booster. #2 - Vitamin E Vitamin E plays an important part for the heart and immune system in both - hoomans and dogs. It also known to improve eye, skin and muscle health. #3 - Rosemary Rosemary is high in iron, vitamin B6, calcium and has been shown to be a very strong antioxidant. Adding rosemary to your dog’s diet is an excellent way to add some benefits of this herb. Did you know that at Cooka’s we use rosemary in all our treats?

#4 - Spirulina Green sea-power with over 60% of all digestible protein! Rich in beta carotene, vitamins B-1,2 and 3, iron, trace minerals and the rare essential fatty acid GLA, which makes this algae a great health-booster. Spirulina strengthens the immune system and its natural carotenoid antioxidants promote cellular health and reduce the risk of infections. Chlorophyll also helps to detoxify the body. #5 – Coconut Oil Coconut oils is becoming more and more popular among dog pawrents and rightfully so – it’s just breaming with benefits! Coconut has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral properties and has been shown to improve skin conditions, aid in digestion and even help control or prevent diabetes. At Cooka’s we add coconut oil to our freshly cooked meals. We also use GOLDEN PASTE, made from turmeric, coconut oil and a dash of black pepper. Find out more about golden paste’s super-powers here. (by the way, we share it for all the family) #6 - Glucosamine and Chondroitin Gluco and Chondro… what? Actually these two boosters are part of any old-fashioned home-made bone broth, a staple in Cooka’s home. Glucosamine and Chondroitin have long been used to help dogs and hoomans suffering from arthritis and joint conditions. Homemade bone broth can be made from any kind of bones (meat or fish), so longer you simmer it, so better. #7 - Peppermint This sweetly scented herb is a great choice to freshen your dog’s breath. Just add some fresh leafs to their food and voila. But besides making your doggie kisses smell like brushed teeth, peppermint also soothes an upset stomach and helps to reduce gas and nausea.

#8 - Yogurt 100% natural, plain, preferably Greek yogurt is an excellent source of calcium and probiotics for dogs. Yogurt has gastrointestinal health benefits and at Cooka’s we use it when we don’t feel so well or have a tummy issue. #9 - Turmeric There are many things that make turmeric a super-spice for dogs. A natural anti-inflammatory, it can help to relieve joint pain, promote cardiovascular health, and strengthen the intestine and bowel functions. It is also a considered an amazing holistic option as a powerful antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal. Golden Paste as mentioned at the coconut section is a true health-gift to all the family. Now available also as super-treats in our Sintra Bliss Barkissini.
