Although every day is Puppy Day… Today it’s official. Yes, March 23 is a special day to celebrate the magic and unconditional love that puppies bring into our lives.
It’s also a day dedicated to helping save orphaned puppies all over the world and educating the public on what they can do to make our furry friends happier.
THE STORY
It all started when animal lover and behaviourist, Colleen Paige, decided that us hoomans need to be more thankful and appreciative of all the unconditional love we get from our pups.
So, in 2006, the Pet & Home Lifestyle Expert and Author founded National Puppy Day, and we cannot be more grateful. It is now considered an international holiday and has trended worldwide for years in a row.
Why it’s important:
In the United States alone, there are almost 10,000 “puppy mills", who don’t see puppies as anything more than a commodity to be sold. Many of these animals live in crammed cages, are sick and don’t get treated properly and are taken from their mothers way too soon.
National Puppy Day is for showering some extra love and encouraging us to always consider adoption first.
WAYS TO CELEBRATE
If you’ve been thinking about adopting your own little fur baby, today and EVERY DAY is the perfect time to visit your local shelter or rescue organisation. Even if you don’t end up taking a little fur child home, at least you will have made their day by spending some time with them and giving them some much-needed love and attention!
Do your bit for the doggie community in other ways such as donating food or toys to the local shelter, raising money through a bake sale, taking an elderly or ill neighbour’s dog for a walk, or even hosting a puppy party in your garden.
However you choose to celebrate, remember the aim is to educate the people and children around you to be kind towards animals – not just on the 23rd March but on all days!
Happy National Puppy Day!
With much love
