1. Why do dogs have a wet nose? Did you ever wonder? Why are dogs noses wet? Well, it seems that dog’s noses are wet to help them absorb scent chemicals! Their nose secretes a special mucus that helps to absorb these chemicals, and then they lick their noses to sample them, helping them understand what the smell is. WOW!!!
2. Newfoundlands can make great lifeguards 'Baywatch' watch out, because Newfoundlands are the ultimate doggy lifeguards and so damn cute! This breed actually havs water resistant coats and webbed feet. They were originally bred as helpers for fishermen and to rescue people from drowning. Some owners have even reported that their dog tried to “rescue” them when they’re swimming.
3. Three dogs survived the Titanic Out of twelve dogs onboard three survived Titanic's tragic sinking. A Pekinese and two Pomeranians. The Pomeranians were brought onto lifeboats by their mistreses, Margaret Hays and Mrs Elizabeth Barrett Rothschild. A Pekinese named Sun Yat Sen was saved by his master, Henry S. Harper, in Lifeboat.
4. A Bloodhound’s sense of smell can be used as evidence in court Apparently a Bloodhound's sense of smell is so spot on that it can be admitted as evidence in a court of law. Now if you thought that was an incredible dog fact, prepare to have your mind blown. Bloodhounds can also follow tracks that are over 300 hours old and can stay on a trail for over 130 miles!
5. Basenji dogs don’t bark, they yodel And you thought that all dogs bark? WELL. The Basenji dog doesn’t bark, instead they kind of yodel...
6. A Greyhound could beat a Cheetah in a long distance race Did you know that a greyhound would actually beat a Cheetah in a long distance race? Greyhounds are excellent long distance runners and can keep a speed of 35mph for up to 7 miles. Where the Cheetah is incredibly fast it can only keep its speed for around 200 -300 yards, so they may have the running start but it would soon be surpassed by a Greyhound!
7. The Ewoks in Star Wars were based on a dog If you’re a Star Wars fan like us, you’ll love this amazing dog fact. It seems George Lucas modelled the Ewoks after his family dog! (we don't know yet what kind of dog it was...)
8. The Saluki is the oldest dog breed The breed of the Saluki dates back to 329BC, where they were kept as royal pets in Ancient Egypt. Reportedly, there are also carvings found in Southern Iraq of a dog that looks similar to a Saluki which dates back to 7000BC.
9. Chow Chows and Shar-Peis have black tongues These two breeds are the only two that have fully black tongues. Even more interesting, the cause of these black tongues is currently unknown.
10. Dogs have three eyelids While you can see the upper and lower lids, the third eyelid only appears when there's issues with the eye. That's when you'll see that reddish or pink membrane emerge and start covering the eye. Formally known as the nictitating membrane, a dog's third eyelid serves as eye protection. We always knew this fact about camels, to protect them from the furry sands, but our kids too?
11. Weimaraners are also called the Velcro dog Well, it is true. Weimis become extremely attached to their owners and don't do well by being left alone.
