With this wonderful weather we’ve been having this Summer, it’s not only us that can struggle with the hot temperatures, but also our furry families ( too.) Dogs, unfortunately, can easily suffer in the heat and unlike humans, they cannot sweat through their skin so they rely on panting and releasing heat through their paws, pads and nose to regulate their body temperature.
With that being said, as temperatures have continued to rise, Cooka has put together her top 5 tips for keeping your dog safe and having fun in the summer sun!
Walking
When being a pet parent, walks are a vital part of a healthy everyday, but with this sizzling heat could be potentially harmful to your dogs’ body temperature. As a general rule, if it’s too hot for your hand it’s too hot for their paws, so if your daily schedule allows it, try and take your dogs for a stroll on cooler times of the day. Perhaps either first thing in the morning or early/late evening as the sun is rising or setting.
Alternatively, if it’s simply just too hot to take the doggies out for some exercise, you can always try different methods for keeping your pooch mentally stimulated.
Why not engage in some brain games instead or teach your fur babies new tricks to keep them (and you) entertained.
Keep them hydrated!
Although it might seem obvious, it’s important to make sure your pup has plenty of water to drink at all times. When at home, keep a check of their bowl, just to ensure there is always fresh water available. Cooka loves big bowls, or even better, buckets filled to the top.
It might also be helpful by placing several water bowls in different locations around the house and garden.
And don’t forget: Always make sure to bring fresh water on walks or trips.
Bring out the frozen treats
In the spirit of keeping your furry kids hydrated, why not treat them to some yummy frozen delights. It’s not just those Humans that like a cold indulgence or two when the weather's nice, Cooka absolutely adores ice-creams.
The best treats are always homemade, so we’ve sourced some of our favourites to try here.
And to make it extra yummy, just crumble some Cooka’s cookies on top. Mhhhh, now that is cookalicious.
Summer wardrobe
If you have a pale dog, then they are more vulnerable to sunburn, particularly on their ears, noses and sparsely haired areas.
However, if your little fur-baby is too eager to go outside, even in the sweltering heat, you could always pop an old T-shirt on them to keep them covered, whilst protecting the vulnerable areas.
Air-conditioning alternatives!
If your house doesn’t come equipped with the nice, refreshing sensation of air conditioning, you don’t need to worry! Find a spot in the shade for your dog to relax in and set up a shallow paddling pool, or simply lay down a wet towel for your dog to lie on... We promise they will find it fun too!
