Summer is almost over, which means back-to-school time! An exciting time for kids and parents, but these big changes in the daily routine can be difficult for our dogs, especially those that had a month filled with playtime and endless attention. With everyone back to everyday life, this means all the wild fun is over and the days become long and lonely again, which can be very hard for some dogs. Many pawrents report changes in their dogs’ behaviour after holidays, like chewing furniture or personal items, urinating or ..(!) in the house, attempting to escape, barking and showing signs of restlessness and anxiety. But with some patience, understanding and a bit of effort, we can help our fur-kids to adjust and avoid the DOGGIE BLUES.
- In the days and weeks leading up to the end of vacation mode slowly start adjusting your schedule. If that means your doggie will need to be fed and walked at different times of the day, then gradually adjust his/her schedule instead of just changing overnight. If your fur-kid will be spending a lot more time alone from now, start adding some alone-time already in the days before returning to the 'normal' schedule.
- Make time for an exercise, before going to work. Even just a brisk 15-minute walk or some active playtime in the park will help to use up some of that endless doggie-energy.
- Your fur-child has become accustomed to the noise of life with the family and just like for us, a quiet house can feel strange. Turn on the TV (there are special pup stations which we LOVE) or turn on the radio.
- Another idea to keep the kids entertained, is a special chewy treat like antlers or a KONG toy which can be stuffed with his/her favourite food. You could even hide a few of those around the house, a hunting game which will keep the mind away from feeling lonely.
